2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Center Point finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Center Point finished seventh in Class 6A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Center Point was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.2 points a game. Center Point struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.2 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, Center Point has gone a combined 31-44. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Center Point has managed to compile a record of 123-147. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 6A and 229th in the AHSAA. The Eagles are led by head coach Shawn Gregory who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Center Point. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gregory. Coach Gregory's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 3-17 (15.0%). The Center Point Eagles will play in Class 6A region six during the 2017 season. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-39 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 5th in the AHSAA. The Eagles enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 17 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Center Point will be to simply win some games. The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Hueytown on Friday, August 25 at Bowman Field. Last year the Hueytown Golden Gophers finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 6A region five. The Golden Gophers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Gardendale by a score of 28-26. Center Point and Hueytown have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 7-9-0 record against the Golden Gophers. They last met in 2016 with Hueytown winning by a score of 20-18.
